The Outdoor Education Program at the High School is an exciting and integral component of the curriculum. Our primary goal over the course of their four years in the High School is to provide all students with physically, emotionally and socially challenging wilderness experiences. Students learn to safely navigate in the wilderness and are encouraged to engage and reflect on their roles as stewards of the earth. The Outdoor Education Program supports the development of practical skills as well as positive character traits in students including respect, responsibility, helpfulness, independence, self-confidence, self-discipline, interpersonal skills, courage and leadership.
Over the course of the school year, students participate in a wide variety of outdoor activities. The school year begins with the Fall Wilderness Trip, a five-day hiking and backpacking excursion for all classes. Year after year, this trip has proven to be deeply significant for the building of open, trusting relationships among students and teachers, and for establishing a social tone and milieu in which education can flourish. Snow Day in January provides the opportunity to go snowshoeing, cross-country or downhill skiing or snowboarding in the local mountains. The school year ends with week-long individual class trips, which include a core range of experiences each year.
